Athletics Tasmania notes with sadness the passing this week of its Life Member, Helen Moir after an extended period of illness.  Helen was also committed to coach education and was a tireless worker and office bearer for the Tasmanian branch of ATFCA.

Helen was one of many in the history of Tasmania who followed her children, most notably her daughter Fiona, into the sport – but what was unusual in Helen’s case was that not only did she become an administrator, competition organiser, official and coach but an athlete as well.

As a Life Member of Little Athletics Tasmania, Helen also served with dedication and distinction. Her devotion to the sport was extensive – in every conceivable capacity including as President of Northern Tasmanian Athletics from 1989 to 2004 and Board Member of AT.

There was always a new event or opportunity in the back of Helen’s mind – and she was a driving force behind NTA’s Australia Day program and fun funs, the Launceston Athletic Carnival, the Northern Athletic Centre Board and early extended opportunities for para athletes.

Helen always found time for athletics amid extensive and diverse family and community activities including the Launceston Competitions Association, the administration of both Highland and Irish Dancing and church involvements.

The Tasmanian Athletics Family extends to Helen’s Family its condolences but also a deep appreciation of her sterling service to our sport.
