It is with much pride that the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association announces the recognition given today 18th February 2023 by World Athletics for its contribution to coach education through its publication of “Modern Athlete and Coach”. The board would like to thank all those contributors to the Coaching Journal over the many years it has been published. Whilst not physically published now, the coaching journal is still being distributed to ATFCA members. Recognition for Jess Jarver who was the original editor and journalist for the magazine cannot be understated. He was an amazing coach and contributor to all coach education in Australia.World Athletics ATFCA AWARD 1

World Athletics Coach Safeguarding Seminar

The philosophical approach to coaching, which World Athletics agrees, is that the role and value of the coach is essential to the performance and delivery process of athlete and team in a culture of sport. Notwithstanding that the coach may variously range from being voluntary to being partly or wholly dependent on coaching as their professional career, the coach will constantly apply best endeavours to deliver highest professional standards in all things to ensure that the best interest of athlete and sport are addressed in terms of wellbeing, development and performance. Whereas access to the rights of the coach may have to be negotiated in light of cultural variations, or the coach may choose the nature and degree of exercising rights and responsibilities as mandatory. WA’s understanding of these expectations carries with it a presumed support for the wellbeing, development, and performance of the Coach, hence, the need for Coaching Safeguards. The goal of coaching safeguards is to inspire and support coaches to deliver great coaching through best practice, training, research, and industry standards across sports, communities and national governing bodies. In safeguarding, WA’s charge is to develop standards of care and raise awareness among coaches of how to recognize and respond to matters of safeguarding coaches at risk of discriminatory practices, unfair wages, false accusations, disrespect, and being violated with verbal, sexual, and mental abuse. The key to safeguarding is learning the needs of coaches, athletes, and other sport staff and volunteers.
Please note the “Coaching Matters” forum (World Athletics) is next Tuesday 7th December 10:00pm (Brisbane time) on Coach Safeguarding moderated by Wendy Truvillion (USA). The attached flyer gives relevant information including the speakers and how to join the forum.
